A general psychiatric assessment is a comprehensive evaluation of a person’s mental and emotional well-being. Its purpose is to provide information about an individual’s psychological and emotional functioning, allowing health professionals to identify any potential mental health difficulties and provide an individual treatment and care plan.
When to Request General Psychiatric Assessment Services.
Consider receiving a general psychiatric evaluation if you or someone you care about is having any of the following challenges:
Symptoms may include mood changes, sleep disturbances, changes in appetite, difficulty concentrating, feelings of hopelessness or helplessness, hallucinations, substance-related disorders, and ongoing trauma or stressors.
What the Service Looks Like
A general psychiatric assessment often involves:
1. Preliminary Consultation: Provide an overview of your medical and psychiatric history, including previous mental health diagnoses, treatments, and medications.
2. Clinical Interview: Discuss your symptoms, feelings, and experiences with a board-certified psychiatrist.
3. Mental Status Exam: We will assess reasoning, mood, and behaviour during the session.
4. Diagnostic Assessment: A psychiatrist evaluates symptoms and medical history to identify underlying mental health disorders. Before your consultation, you must fill out two types of questionnaires: one for a general medical history and one for particular psychometric scales to help you understand your situation.
5. Treatment Planning: Our psychiatrist will create a treatment plan tailored to your specific needs.
What To Expect:
You can anticipate the following throughout the assessment:
1. Confidential and non-judgmental area to share thoughts and feelings.
2. Your mental and emotional health are extensively tested and evaluated.
3. Obtaining a diagnosis and personalised treatment plan for your mental health concerns.
4. Provide additional assessment and therapy as needed.
5. Provide ongoing support and follow-up to track progress and update treatment records.
Our approach with you is to completely educate you on the current state of your mental health and to begin working on the construction of a plan that will return you to an optimal level of wellness.
